My new Marathon book arrives

After a long long wait of about 2 months, I finally received my copy of “The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer” by Whitsett, et. al. from firstandsecond.com. This is the first time that any of the books I ordered from this store have been delayed for so long, most get delivered within 3 weeks. Anyway, the book is “the bestselling” book for first time marathoners, and is highly recommended. This is my second book on this topic, after Hal Higdon’s “Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide”, which I ordered before starting with my marathon training in August.

19 km and almost there

This weekend, I did my 19 km long run. Since it had rained heavily on Friday, I skipped Saturday and did the run on Sunday. The route was mostly ok after the heavy rains, just one place where the route was broken. There was a very mild drizzling initially, and overall, some really nice conditions to run, which myself and Vivek took full advantage of.

It was 7 laps of the Nehru park which we had to do, and after doing 6, I had to give my all to achieve the target of finishing in 2:30 hrs, which I barely managed to do. Since this was 19 in a practice run, I think it would be realistic to complete the actual Delhi half marathon (Oct 16) in 2:30, or maybe even better, who knows.

HDHM, here I come!

Yesterday, I received the acceptance letter for the Hutch Delhi Half Marathon (HDHM), confirming my entry. I was very happy to see that, my first entry into any long distance event of this kind. It even gives my running number : 485, so if you happen to see a 485 at HDHM, you know who that was, right 🙂 October is going to be a tough tough month for me, with lot of other commitments, so it will take all the determination I have to keep my running schedule on track.

Since this is my first event, I would like to know how good the organizers are here in India when it comes to organizing events like these. How are the facilities, is it just plain water, or sports drinks, any gels, etc, and at what distances. Do put in your comments if you had experiences of running in India.

Tomorrow is another big challenge for me, the 19K long run. And it is raining like anything here in Delhi, so lets see whether it would be possible to run at all or not.

Running Shoes

It is always difficult to pick a pair of shoes that suites you, with such a wide variety of brands and models available. It depends upon your foot structure primarily and there are websites that will help you in deciding what to choose. I got a basic Adidas Shore running shoe when I started running, and I am now considering getting another one, in time for my first event.

Here is the list of some shoes I considered.

  • Asics Kayano XI ($130) – Stability Plus
  • Asics GT 2100 ($85) – Stability
  • New Balance 990, 991 ($105) – Stability Plus
  • New Balance 1023 ($90) – Neutral Plus
  • New Balance 766 ($80) – Stability
  • Adidas Supernova Control ($75-90) – Stability
  • Adidas Supernova Cushion ($65-85)
  • Adidas AdiStar Cushion ($90-110) Adidas
  • AdiStar Control ($95-$120)
  • Adidas Response ($80)

And based on these, I have narrowed down to one of the following three for me:

  • ASICS® GT-2100
  • New Balance® 766
  • Adidas® Supernova Control

I guess I will be bying the New Balance 766. It has also won the Road Runners magazine Editor’s Choice Award for 2005.

Hyderabad Marathon postponed!

It is now confirmed. The Hyderabad Midnight run has been postponed to November 19th. It was originally scheduled for September 24th.

BTW, the Delhi marathon has also been rescheduled to Dec 11th, 2005.
